Holy Friday night: Our Mother
The presence of Mary ends, on the nigth of Easter Friday, with evidence of her sorrow in her arms, as she carries the body of her Son. The people of Zamora rightly call her Our Mother. She appears in the streets late on the night of Easter Friday when the people’grief has run its course and turned into faith. Men and women form the ranks of the procession.
The Anguished Virgin is yet another poem in wood carved by the artist Ramón Álvarez, a sculpture of extrordinary devoutness and a special favour in Zamora. For this reason the people lovingly call it Our Mother.
